The American Film Theatre Collection was conceived in
the 1970s to merge the worlds of film and theatre. The premise
was to take dramatic works of art and turn them into cinematic
works of art by broadening out the action, thereby appealing to
lovers of theatre and film. The collection combines some of the
best known plays of the day, together with lesser known, but
equally compelling works, rarely seen since they were made and
never before released on home video. This relevant film series
not only offered theatre to those who did not have access to
stage productions, but also appealed to lovers of both art forms.
Featuring the greatest actors of our time, together with some of
the most renowned playwrights and producers, the credits read
like a Who's Who of 20th Century talent. Amongst these are
Alan Bates , Jessica Tandy ,
Lee Marvin , Fredric March ,
Judi Dench , Stacy Keach ,
Susannah York , Glenda Jackson ,
Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder .
Each DVD contains a wealth of extras, including in-depth
interviews with the stars, directors and producers, theatrical
trailers and articles written by leading critics and reviewers of
many films that have been seen on the Broadway stage and vice
versa.
